The automatic tranny oil cooler is bolted to the bottom of the radiator. Typically, the gauge creeping up in temp indicates that you've been stuck in traffic, and not getting a lot of airflow over the radiator. When the radiator gets hot enough, the cooling fan kicks on. However, it doesn't give the tranny oil cooler much coverage.
My guess is that you're seeing an indication of the tranny fluid getting hot. This can be due to stop-and-go driving not putting much airflow over the radiator, or possibly some heat-soak of the engine radiator down to the oil cooler. Either way, not a good sign, as this isn't normal. The tranny shouldn't be slipping when hot, unless it's pretty hot.
If you haven't had the tranny fluid changed in the past couple of years/15K miles, then do so immediately.
The other point is that 188K on an original automatic is pretty darn good. It's possible that the tranny is starting to get tired, and the first sign is slippage when hot, as clearances change. There isn't a lot you can do about this.
I do a tranny fluid change - a flush if possible.
