I have a BSR re-mapped ECU with JT 3" exhaust and other mods. This allows the engine to put out 250hp. That's quite a lot more than stock, and much more than a stick Aero (225hp).
I always shift the tranny manually when I'm driving fast and/or hard. I also do this when I want to always have some torque on tap, as well as to keep the tranny from shifting up and down if I'm in traffic.
I completely change the ATF every 15K miles. This means draining, filling, and driving for 15 minutes, then doing this process over again 2 more times. That ensures that the ATF that's in the case after the last fill is all fresh ATF. I use Castrol Dexron-III/Mercon (it's not synth).
I do not allow the car to downshift on its own when driving it hard. I also do not shift it up or down above 5K rpm's. I let off the gas slightly when shifting to lower the amount of torque being applied at the moment of the shift. I do not do any "jack-rabbit" starts in 1st, either.
Some people have done the things I do not do time and time again, and their tranny's are perfectly fine. It's the luck of the draw. But I feel everything I can do to prevent premature failure makes me one-step ahead of the game.
