David,
The other guys (like Kappy) know much more about AC than I do. I replaced the compressor because the bearing froze, not specifically to convert the system to r134. In essence you'll need a set of gauges (or, as GM spells it, "gages"), the r134 nipples for the high and low side (on the compressor on my 91), some o-rings, a new receiver-drier. There are kits but it's cheaper to just buy the nipples individually from an auto parts place and the receiver-drier from a site sponsor like eeuroparts. Others have posted the procedure, do a search and you'll find more information than you ever wanted to know. It's not a bad job but can be frustrating as there can be gremlins, as I'm experiencing, which, to the relatively ignorant like me, can be tough to diagnose. Whatever procedure you follow, WEAR GOGGLES. Gauges can pop off connections, hoses can blow etc. and a blast of r134 in the eyes can blind you. Goggles are not optional.
