Headlight Relay Posted by Bill Homer [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Ignition off...headlights stay on...battery runs flat??, Norm, Mon, 14 Jun 2004 07:02:30 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Welcome to the world of SAAB 9000 ownership! The "headlights staying on" problem is probably due to the headlight relay, located in the relay/fuse box immedately in front of the battery - it's a red box about 75mm wide x 25mm deep x 30mm tall, labled as such. These are known to have issues with bad solder joints and are an easy DIY if you are handy with a soldering iron (or find someone who is!). Pry off the cover and look for cracked or discolored solder joints. They do eventually wear out, but shouldn't at the age/mileage on your car. The problem may also be due to the orange Headlight Control Relay, but the red one solved a similar problem on my 1994 car, the orange one caused different headlight issues, i.e. high/low beam malfunctions.
If your battery has been discharged to flat a few times, it is probably worth replacing, as this action will shorten its life. See what the load test reports, but don't be suprised at the bad news. Deal with the central locking issue after your battery is sorted out, it may be solved.
