There are two lower engine mounts, both on the right side of the engine, one front, one rear. There is one mount under the tranny. Lower engine mounts run about $60-$80 each. See

I suggest sticking with OEM hydraulic mounts. The alternative is solid rubber. The hydraulic mounts provide the best vibration damping. The solid mounts are cheaper, but they transmit more vibration.
Quasi's site has info on replacing the mounts. See http://www.quasimotors.com/mountinfo.htm
It isn't a small job, but it is definately DIY. I've done it a few times. With the right tools, it's a few hours - a good Saturday afternoon. To access the mounts, you remove the right front wheel fender inner liner. No big deal. But this does expose the whole accessory side of the engine. Now is a good time to replace the serpentine belt if it's old. Thinking about fixing that leaky main seal or oil pump O-ring? How's the water pump? Need to replace the alternator voltage regulator? I usually end up doing a bunch of other stuff 'while I'm in there.' At a minimum, inspect the rubber portion of the main pulley, to make sure it's in good shape. And I'll release tension on the belt(s) and check the idler pulleys for play.
If the lower mounts are shot, check the health of the upper mount (torsion bar - 'dogbone'). Usually one won't go without the other.
I assume that since you don't know the number of mounts, a mechanic told you that the mounts were shot, and provided a breathtaking price to remove the problem. Typical mechanic prices run $300-$600. I would be nice to inspect the mounts yourself, to know if they are shot.
Also, please provide the year of your car - there are year-to-year model differences.
