Bad bearings usually show up as a 'ballsy rumble' on the weighted side - the outside on a turn. I disagree somewhat with the mechanic - unweighted, you should be able to feel a little play in the bearing by pulling on the tire.
A lot of this is a matter of degree. Wheel bearing failure is progressive. Early detection is hard, because the symptoms can look like so many other things. As the bearings get worse, you notice more vibration over a greater range of speeds, more during turning, some vibes going straight forward.
If you/the mechanic aren't feeling any play with the tire off the ground, and the vibration is only in a limited speed range, I would suspect the tire first. If the tires are wearing unevenly, it may be an alignment issue, which can cause vibration. Worn bushings can cause vibration. Lastly, cupped/worn tires, or a tire with a shifted belt can cause vibration.
I would have the tires rotated, and see if the problem follows the tires. If so, it's the tires. If the tires look worn unevenly, think about an alignment. Not only are these good (read: cheap) diagnostic tests before you dig into the wheel bearings, they're something that should be done periodically.
