It's very confusing. Posted by SWEDECAR [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Thanks Anders. Is ECT same as NTC, coolant, Petre A, Sun, 27 Jun 2004 17:30:12 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
It is an ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature sensor) of NTC (Negative Temperature Coeficient) type. Why they decided that the wire harness should be labeled with the type and not the name of the sensor is probably buried deep in the woods of Trolls.
NTC means the resistance gets lower and lower as hotter the engine gets.
A typical reading is about 2500 Ohm at room temperature (cold engine) and about 200-300 Ohm when engine is warm. Very rarely do the sensor go bad.
It might be a vacuum leak from a broken hose that makes the car run lean in the morning. It could be a dirty/gummed up throttle body and idle motor.
It could be an air mass meter that starts to go bad, making the engine run lean when cold.
The list is endless when it comes to cold start problems and it takes a dedicated mechanic or DIY person to check and put aside all the small easy stuff first before going for the bigger more expensive stuff.
