A couple of tricks-
First- don't put the belt on the alternator last. That pulley has a lip. Instead, loop the belt over the alternator pulley, and all the other pulleys that the belt goes on EXCEPT for the idler pulley that DOESN'T move. That's the idler just forward of the alternator pulley.
I compress the belt tensioner by sticking a big breaker bar on the nut of the adjusting pulley, and with the bar sticking up, I push it towards the rear of the car. It's a left-hand bolt, so it won't loosen. I lift the power steering reservoir up and out of the way, and move the coolant tank, too. Now, here's the big trick - don't just push hard on the bar. Push SLOWLY. The faster you push, the harder it is. Just push slowly, and you'll be amazed how much it'll compress.
With your free hand, reach down and slip the belt over the idler pulley. Since it doesn't have a lip to get over, you don't have to compress things as much.
I like moving the PS and coolant reservoirs for two reasons. First, it allows you the largest 'throw' of the breaker bar, which means lots of movement on the tensioner. Second, if the socket were to slip off the nut, if the PS reservoir were still in place, you'll cream it with the bar. An expensive mistake.
Basics- slide the belt over the pulley with no lip, and push slowly.
