Hi there,
For the past few days, I have been experiencing a marked delay (2-3 seconds) between when I shift into "R" and when it engages. I have been told by a couple indies that this is common in early ZF trannys and otherwise does not affect drivability. I contacted Eriksson Ind. and was told the most likely fix would involve removal and disassembly of the tranny.
"THER IS A SLEEVE INSIDE THE REVERSE DRUM THAT IS JUST
PRESSED INTO PLACE, IT CAN BE KNOCKED BACK INTO THE DRUM WHEN
EXCESS END PLAY IS PRESENT. THE SLEEVE GRADUALLY MOVES BACK
AND BLOCKS THE OIL HOLE FEEDING THE "B" REVERSE CLUTCH. REPAIR
REQUIRES DISASSEMBLY OF TRANS."
Yesterday, the delay also developed a "Thunk!" - harsh engagement when it engages. The delay is still there as well. The "Thunk!" is worse when the brakes are on.
Thoughts??? I can live with this if it's not going to get worse. But auto tranny repairs/replacement on a 15 year old car start getting into the "diminishing returns" category.
