removing cabin air sensor fan on dash

Several months ago someone had posted asking how to remove this fan. The response made it sound so easy: remove ashtray, reach up behind, push out fan, remove and oil bearings, pop fan back in. Seized with inspiriation, my husband went out to the car yesterday to finally clean those noisy bearings. After removing both the ashtray and the radio, he was forced to conclude that the fan was not going to come out that way.
The problems included the following:
-there is a thick plastic casing and a rubber O-ring that prevent the fan from being pushed forward from behind.
-there are also plastic clips on the back of the fan whose arrangement would suggest that the unit was originally installed from behind the dash, prohibiting removal from the front. But there is no practical way to reach up and get it from behind (the access is too small for his arms and probably for mine also).
-there is no access to the fan area from the radio opening, due to a plastic barrier in the way.
Are we missing something here? Or were we just not trying hard enough? (I'd rather have noisy bearings than a broken fan, so we have so far avoided applying any serious force.) Many thanks.
