Weird cause of improved performance

So as my wife and I are driving to the movies last night, wwhen we came across what looked like part of a truck axle in the middle of our lane. As didn't have enough time to switch lanes to avoid it, not wanting to roll a tire over it, and hoping that it was short enough to go over, I had just enough time to center my 9k and went directly over it.
Alas I heard and felt a big clunk immediately as we passed over it. The theater was only half a mile away so rather than pull over, I drove to the parking lot before inspecting the undercarriage. Nothing was leaking and I did not see any obvious signs of damage. Looks like I did better than most as we passed a row of cars (6 or 7) all of which were changing flats and/or had front or rear bumper damage.
Now the weird part. Driving home from the theater, my '93 CSET is driving better, e.g., accelerating and boosting better and more consistently, riding more smoothly. Now as those of you who have seen my posts will recall, I have been battling with a rough ride, hesitation, variable boost problem for some time. My indy says it is partly an O2 sensor problem (I won't bore you with the details see my previous posts if interested) and also related to a problem with the balance shaft chain.
Knowing that better performance can sometimes be caused by a bad thing, anyone have any idea what may have happened here and what I should check? I'm at a loss to explain it.
