Ok, here's a lesson on an LPT upgrade (long).... In order to make your LPT a FPT, you need two things to happen: you need to install a BPV or APC solenoid (the valve mounted on the radiator shroud with three hoses) and you need the computer to be able to control that valve.
In a LPT, the Trionic is not really TRIonic, because it only controls two things, not three, hence TRI. The boost is not controlled by the computer, not even a factor in the computer's operation, because it has no way of telling when/if the turbo is boosting. Therefore, it is set at base boost and named Light Pressure.
When you add a BPC, the computer now has a way of telling when/if the turbo is boosting, and can therefore adjust it appropriately. However, in most cases the LPT copmuter (ECU) CANNOT recognize the BPC and will continue on normally as a LPT when a BPC is installed. Therefore, it is necessary to install an ECU from a FPT car, or a re-mapped one from a tuning company.
In jj's unusual case, when he added the BPC, the computer did recognize it and began functioning as a FPT. We speculate, though, that the former owners had installed a FPT computer either without realizing it, or in trying to upgrade to a FPT without using a BPC valve (Wrong!).
When I did the upgrade, same year ('95), I installed the BPC and tried to let the computer adapt for a few months. At the end, it still only put out base boost. When I added an Aero computer, though, it instantly became a FPT and put out the correct amount of boost for a FPT car.
I would suggest, as jj said, to try just the BPC first. If the ECU does not adapt, then swap out the computer. It's a really easy mod and is something that will totally change your outlook on your car. Good luck!
