The diode thing is actually a thermal fuse. I'm assuming now that you've got all 4 fan speeds.

A couple of things to check. Look inside the grill from the front - there should be a small radiator fan on the front. Does that turn on when you turn on the AC? If so, then you know that the AC relay is pulling in AND the contacts are OK. The fan and clutch are wired in parallel. That would mean a AC clutch problem - it could be a clutch problem, or something as simple as the wiring. The relay provides 12 volts to the clutch, but don't forget that there is a ground wire from the clutch to chassis.

Basically, you need to start working backwards from the clutch. If the clutch isn't getting power, go back to the AC relay. Jumper the relay and see if the clutch pulls in. If so, check the signal to the relay coil. Again, you're just working backwards. The AC coil is energized by the switch in the dashboard and the cabin blower motor, but there is a lot more to it.

There is a time delay relay off the ignition switch, which keeps the AC off for 10 seconds after the engine starts. There is a pressure switch, and the anti-freeze thermostat, all of which are on the +12 volt side of the AC relay coil. On the low side is a throttle angle switch, to kick the AC off if the throttle is wide open. Of course, this all depends on model and year.

This will be tough without a schematic. But I'd start at the AC relay.
