On my 88 turbo, I had the exact same symptoms that you did--squealing at startup first thing in the morning, but not the rest of the day. My squeals would sometimes last almost 30 seconds!
Just changed the pulley over the weekend--no more squealing! My belt was not wandering at all, and I had previously inspected the pulley in December (removed it when doing oil seals to fix leak). I couldn't see a problem at that time (but there wasn't a squeak).
When I removed the pulley, wear was not obvious from the outside of the pulley, but really obvious on the engine side (lots of little rubber shavings!). I painted a line across the face of the new one to check wear in the future.
I do have a new problem, however. When tightening the crank pulley bolt to the proper torque, I used a screwdriver to jam the flywheel. However, this screwdriver (which is now bent!) moved in such a way that it sheared off the electrical connection for my temp gauge. Any ideas where I can get a replacement temp sensor, or how to re-create the electrical connection?
Good luck--not a bad DIY job, though.
