Not because it is dark, but because you are on your first synthetic oil. Sludge from previous oils may be gooping up this oil. Also, you are already a quart down, a worrisome condition on it's own. I've never gotten a quart low between changes on 5 Saabs.
So I would put in some fresh synthetic. This time pay attention to what is put in. Who is doing your oil changes? From the sounds of the 'General' board, JIffy Lube is a good one to stay away from. Your independant Saab mechanic is probably your best bet for a good job.
Good synthetics suggested on this board are MI 0-40, or the new 5-40 truck and SUV also by Mobil. This oil is known some places as Delvac 1 too. I'm using Royal Purple, but will likely switch to the Delvac or MI 5-40 when I run out. I would think this oil will be fine for Ariz, even in the Summer.
A good oil filter is the Purolator Pure One for around $5. Also Mobil 1 and Amsoil for $10-15. Your independant may allow you to bring your own oil and filter to him to change. At least you'll know what is going into the car, and can buy an extra quart to top off. Also you won't have the Jiffy Lube guy emptying your tranny fluid and adding an extra 4qts of oil to the engine. At least the tranny and engine quit at the same time....
I would change the syn every 4-6k for a few changes, then you should be good to go for 8-10k depending on what kind of driving you do.
You could change your own oil. Cost about $25-30 for the use of M1, a very good oil, maybe the best. Does involve getting dirty, and you need a place to work.
Carry a spare quart of oil, and keep the level topped off to the m of the max mark on the dipstick. You'll use less oil by keeping the engine cooler and better lubed.
