seems noisy ~ any ideas?

1995 9000 non turbo 5 speed. When starting and idling the engine seems noisy. There's no knocks or pings whatsoever, it's a groaning sound. Almost seems like something is scraping [consistantly], not to excessive but seems louder than normal. I bought the car a few months ago with impeccable records as my first Saab. It always seemed noisy, this is nothing new but annoying unless I'm just being paranoid. I took it to a independent shop where they told me it could be a worn tensioner but they thought it sounded normal to them for a Saab. Well, I requested new tensioners and belts but it's still there. They claim it sounds normal and I'm just used to my quite Toyota. I still say it's louder than normal to me. I went to a car lot where I saw a 1993 900 and asked to start it for comparison and it seemed the same ?!? I don't know how much the same they are but it looked the same under the hood. One shop I called said it could be a timing chain guide in the valve cover, a common noise. I went through the records and see a timing chain, water pump and related was done per recommended interval in May 2003 at 78,000 miles at a cost of $1670 and it now has only 83,000 miles. One other note, occassionaly I get a grind when shifting into first gear if I'm not completely stopped?
