A/C questions

So, I finally got around to fixing my A/C. I replaced a leaky hose, the expansion valve, and the drier. I did a not-especially thorough flush in case there was anything weird in there and vacuumed for a few hours.
When I charged, the high side would occasionally get up to 250, but would always drop back to about 220. The low side stayed close to 30. The lowest vent temp I ever saw was 51. This was at 85 outside and 1500 RPM. Driving around I get more like 55. It's 85 out still.
I'm a little disappointed in this. I realize there may be many reasons why I don't get good cooling, but I'm a little confused by the pressures. It seemed like adding A LOT of r134 did not raise the high side appreciably. I thought perhaps it was leaking out as fast as I was putting it in, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Any theories? Could the compressor be on its way out?
The car is a 93 with r134 originally. The drier I removed had a '93 date stamped on it, so I'm guessing not much has ever been done to it.
Thanks
