Bought a '93 9000cse tonite... trans questions

Decided it was time to upgrade from my '88 spg so I picked up a '93 9000cse tonite. The car needs a transmission, the owner was under the impression that '93 trans were year specific, is this true? If it is a one year only trans I feel it would be easier to completely replace the engine/trans with one from a newer, lower mileage 9k... how complicated would it be to make this swap, as in what electronics would need to be changed and how difficult would it be. Don't worry about being able to complete the work, my dad has been a saab indy mechanic for 25 years so we know our way around the cars... but the 9000's less so than 900's. Also any insights on things to look for on the '93?
And the best part... payed next to nothing for the car and it came with a set of gorgeous super aeros and brand new tires :-)
Any help is appreciated,
Mike
