Fairly easy on my '88. Should be even easier for you, since the 2.3 engines put the filter in a MUCH better location (i.e. easier access).

I have heard that oil collects in the cylinder head, and allowing the car to sit overnight will enable more of the old oil to be drained out.

Make sure that you have oil filter pliers--so much easier to get the filter out (and on again).

Also make sure that you have a container big enough to hold all the oil that comes out. I like the ones that have a spout of several inches--much easier to pour without a big mess.

You can recycle your old oil (and ATF!). I take mine to a local AutoZone.

As far as your filter question--you may have inadvertantly kicked a hornet's nest. General consensus on the board seems to be (look at me adding to the controversy!) that SAAB filters and Mann filters are the best. I've also heard good things about Pure One (which I'm using) and awful, terrible, horrible things about Fram.
