OBD-II Code reader on OBD-I car.

Does anyone know if I can take a standard OBD-II code reader and read the codes on a 1995 9000 that is OBD-I compliant. I know that the conectors are different on the two cars. Is there some kind of conversion cable that can be purchased? Or won't the Code reader read any of the codes at all? I've got a 1995 9000 that is giving me a check engine light. I stoped at Checker auto last night to see if they were able to read the code and just as I was pulling into the parking lot the check engine light went out. Does the on board computer maintain the code that was bad or does it go away when the light goes off? They weren't able to read the codes on the car because they didn't have the approprate connector for the car. Does anyone know what this light going on and off again might mean? Thanks for all your support.
