The intial blinking of the SRS light that you see is normal... then the system has a fault that's what it is programmed to do to get your attention, blink and then after a while go steady.
As for why the light is on in the first place... it's possible the fuse blew somehow, which you could check easily, but, if the fuse is not blown... the only way to know for sure WHY the olight came on and the ONLY way to get it to go off, is to go to a saab dealership.
You can assume that because the light is on, the airbag WILL NOT go off in an accident... so if you're concered about it as a safety issue, then by all means get it looked at.
However, my light came on, and i decided to scrap the airbag wheel altogether, and get a wheel from an older car to save $$$ on a possible airbag replacement... I got in an 85 MPH accident in an 87 900, with no airbag, and no one was hurt. We were LUCKY of course, however i feel safe enough in the old clunker that i couldn't justify spending $500-$1000 on airbag system repairs...
...which brings me to another option you have available to you... take the insturment cluster out of the car, and PULL THE SRS LIGHT BULB! :) seriously, that's what i did...
...good luck in either case
