I seem to get too much boost - engine appears stronger than usual, and if accelerating uphill in third, fourth and fifth, boost can enter the red zone if not paying attention, and a few times, the car has then suddenly stalled, only to run completely normal thereafter.

My mechanic looked at it, and says some form of pressure relief valve in the turbo has rusted shut, and the only reason I still have my head gasket left is that one of the pressure hoses has a small crack in it which lets out excess pressure, and that I should now pay him to replace the turbo altogether.

How can I check what's going on? Wouldn't it be possible to just fix that valve without replacing the entire turbo?
