You take off the dash top - about 10 times easier. Don't believe everyone's suggestions on this board. The dash top comes off surprisingly easy. Undo screws holding speaker covers on, there are screws holding the dash top there and at top of glovebox (one is hidden under rubber plug). There may also be a screw going up from right-hand side of front of cluster (depending on year). The dash top comes up - front (near glass) is held by a clip. Be careful of the little light sensor at the right. Several electrical connectors on cluster must be disconnected including the ones to the EDU controller near clock. Also the vacuum line to the boost gauge. Only two screws hold the cluster itself.
This procedure is explained on the Townsend website.
The EDU lights are special, bayonet mount - you can replace just the little bulbs with one's from Radio Shack if you're handy but otherwise you have to buy new at dealer. BMW bulbs work also - I find this sort of stuff in yards.
Good luck (a 2 hour job max.) but if you are inexperienced, longer, or not recommended. You need Torx drivers.
