gas fumes 89 9KT - EGR valve? Posted by Rob [Email] (#1828) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Rob) on Tue, 27 Jul 2004 08:17:18 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I've had this car only since 1/04. On the first hot weather (90s) in May, the inside of the car started smelling like gas fumes. When the weather cooled, right away, the fumes also went away. Many weeks later, the fumes came back even in 77 degree weather. True 118k on car and engine at this point. I then read up all the threads I could find here on this, and went to mechanic #1, who'd never seen the car before, doesn't specialize in Saabs, but was highly touted by a friends taking their Saabs to him over many years. He asked if I could smell fumes when the car was off and just sitting. No. So he said it wasn't the charcoal canister or the "nylon vapor line that runs from the fuel filler housing to the canister at the right front fender via the roof of the car". At the end of the day he said it was over his head and equipment, "probably PCV stuff", and recommended mechanic #2. No charge!
So, off to m#2, supposedly very Saab-savvy, 25 years on a lot of Saabs, with *just* the gas fumes complaint and the notion of the PCV. Day one, they looked everything over and said I needed 'lots' of work, they'd have to order the PCV stuff, but did I want the full tune-up they thought it needed? They spec'd out the costs, and I gave the go-ahead. At the end of the day I had an oil change/filter, air filter, fuel filter, dist cap, rotor, NGK plugs, 4 fuel line seals, and a distributor seal - for parts. Also some kind of weld on the distributor shaft, which had been oily. Total charge $360 P&L. Seems pretty high for this, but what do I know...
Drive out, don't smell fumes! But I'm committed now with a parts down payment for the PCV work.
Day two, PCV parts are in. Four hoses, a nipple, and a bushing for $205 plus $90 labor = $295. Together with day one, that's $655.
So I drive out, and the gas fumes are back! Same intensity as before. I've got to admit, the car did need this tune-up work. Previous owner's meticulous service records stopped at 90k. And, my EDU now shows around 34mpg cruising at 50 on a flat zone, when before it showed around 19mpg in same situation. Nearly double. 93 octane. Anyway, call m#2 and report the fumes, and now they ask if I'm getting any warning light. No. But "maybe it's your EGR valve anyway". Couldn't be the work or parts they already did. That is, more diagnostic, more part(s), more labor.
Being pretty broke, this is getting to me. Any advice welcomed.
Rob
P.S. On a previous visit to SaabNet I found a northeast/newEngland owners group, but now cannot find them. Where?
