The day finally arrived! My wife's '91 S is fixed (for now). All that's left is the PA state inspection and emissions test (although I've gone over the car pretty well--not expecting anything) to be done later this week.
I don't know if anyone has been following this saga or not (I've asked a bunch of questions of the board about it), but I wanted to share and thank everyone who responded to my posts. Every bit of information was helpful and enabled me to repair the car in the back of the house. It took me many Saturdays, and I got an education along the way.
I got the car a while ago off eBay for about $700. I suspected governor seals. To make a long story short, it was two problems--a washer on the C brake servo piston had broken, and some valves in the governor needed to be replaced. I do have some pictures of the transmission parts if anyone is interested, but no way to post them. I also had to add an ATF cooler and new hoses (which is most likely what caused the problems to begin with).
All told, I spent about $450 in parts, necessary tools, and fluids. Thanks especially to Ari and Swedecar for tips about the ATF hoses, and to BobS for all the advice about transmission internals and testing, etc.
I never could have done this without SaabNet--you all have helped so much.
Thanks again.
