I have a 90 9000 with a little over 200,000 miles that (at least when I last drove it, it's off the road for now) runs as perfectly as any new car i've ever been in. last emissions test the guy said it tested better than most new cars. BUT gas mileage never seems to get much over 30 on highway, and 18-22 in town.

I have a 92 9000 with 168K that i've had since 130K, consistently gets better gas mileage than the 90, but doesn't perform as well... acceleration-wise, power, etc.

In horrible traffic, 20-22, normal city driving, 24, highway 32-34 easy, under ideal highway, 35, with those moments where i can sustain 40 until there's a rise, etc..

I was getting like 30-32 highway, recently, and changed the air filter on it, which brought it up noticeably to 34 without much effort.

I took out the plugs, to see if I could better it, and there was hardly anything left to them, barely enough metal to gap, which amazed me, as the gap was probably 3 times as big as it should be, i have photos somewhere on my computer, so i changed the plugs, and power improved a little, but i haven't noticed much difference in fuel economy.

What I conclude from these two cars, based on driving, is that they are geared differently. Both 5 speeds.

The RPM's seem higher in each gear on my 90; in 5th gear on the highway in my 90, I really want a 6th gear, whereas in my 92, I'd like one, but the car feels more relaxed, it's not working as hard.

First gear in my 90 launches the car, almost as fast as i'd like it, but the 92 is slow.

I think that's the solution to the mystery, but it's still a mystery...
