The value of the airbag is a trade off, to protect at high speed crashes with potential for airbag injury at low speed. Did she have her seat belt on? Did the airbag save her head from bouncing off the windshield at the expense of her wrist? It's all relative. With the seat belt on, the airbag is not necessary at low speeds. WIthout the belts, it can be very valuable. The only potential fault in the crash protection system of your 9000 is the large passenger airbag which deploys horizontally from the dash. This increases the possibility of limb injury for a passenger bracing herself and a possibility of upper body involvement with the deploying bag if the passenger is within deployment zone. The newer designs deploy upward, then back.

Did the seat belt pretensioners work? The seat belt would be abraded at the upper anchor where the slack was pulled back. The belt may also be locked in place. There's a question of their potency as they age.
