The alternative method for detonation prevention is piezo transducers located at strategic locations on the block or heads. The difficulty with this system is picking a detonation signal out from all of the background engine noise.

Also, very sensitive to changes in the mechanical structure of the block. The local Porsche racers decked one of the blocks a few thou which changed the resonant characteristics of the block. The transducers no longer picked up the detonation signals correctly and the whole motor went 'boom'.

The really amazing thing at the time was the processor subsystem. I haven't had the lid off a T5 box in a while but I seem to recall either a 32 bit Motorola processor, or perhaps MIPS. At the time this was more processing power than many PCs.

This gave the T5 enough processing power to calculate the optimum mixture and timing for each individual cylinder. Thus T5 could compensate for cylinder to cylinder variations, where most motors at the time had to set the timing to prevent detonation on the leanest cylinder, at the expense of the rest. I was truly impressed at the time.

These days, however, powerful DSP processors can be had for $5.00. I suspect a cheap version of the T5 has found it's way into many other GM products.
