I've rather given up rotating tyres because the fronts wear out twice as fast as the back ones, so I avoid paying for four new tyres half of the time.
Of course, this means that you could end up having bald fronts and decent rears - not clever - but I never let them get that far. There must be a really neat way of bringing the spare into the cycle, too, but I'm too stupid to work it out. Also, my tyres are directional which limits the options.
Working back from all that, if you're going to rotate (and it must be a good idea if you ignore the cash-flow issues) an interval of say 5,000 miles between rotations, maybe?
As mentioned, my tyres are directional Goodyear F1-GSD3s but even if they were not I wouldn't personally swap tyres from one side to the other, only front to back.
