On top of what Rick (which is all accurate) it is also a slim chance that the shop only have "one pump" in stock that they use for several models.
All models from 90 and up uses a look alike fuel pump assembly, but the difference between them is the electric connector and wiring (which can be moved over from old to new pump) and the shape of float wire and resistor in fuel sending unit.
If a mechanic doesn't know or think about it, he might say, Oh this is a look alike pump as for the one I just removed and he moves the wiring harness over to the new pump and plunk it down in place.
The different shape of float and resistor will make the fuel gauge read inaccurate.
