If memory serves, '87-'89 9000 are susceptible to the wire insulation rot, and possibly some similar years of the C900. As the story goes, it was just inferior wire that made it into the production line. However, I have an '87, and have noticed this problem, but only on completely exposed wires. My climate is fairly benign though, moderate temperatures almost the entire year, no salt, and I try to keep the engine compartment clean. So while the root cause was the poor wire to begin with, environment does seem to play a part in the severity of the problem.
It is a mess and a pain to repair, but the bill for that kind of job at a shop would not be pretty. In these parts, the cost of labor is going up faster than my wage (but then what isn't?) and is already astronomical.
