I drive a 1990 9000 turbo, and sometimes, when i put the car in reverse, the pictogram will show that the rear lights are out... but a little tap of the brake pedal, and the diagram will go back to normal.
From what i understand of this system, it works as follows...
There are coils around each of the lamps in the system, not connected to the lamps themselves, but connected to the pictogram circuit.
When both bulbs are working, the coils pick up the bulbs electromagnetic field and they are sent to the pictogram circuitry...
...once they both arrive there, they cancell each other out, because they are opposite signals.
In the event that one bulb is out, the signal will make it through the circuitry to the pictogram and light the bulbs.
If you used two different wattage lamps in the system, the pictogram would ALSO light up, because the signals won't fully cancell each other out...
i'm not sure exactly how to remedy this problem, but i know how annoying it can be.
One thing you COULD do is take the top of the dash board off, take the insturment cluster out, and pull the rear indicator bulbs right out of the pictogram itself...
this is exactly what i did for my SRS light... which was annoying as heck...
good luck, hope this clears things up
