92 9KTurbo. Sometimes the cooling fan seems to run "forever" (say, an hour, before I pull the relay) after motor shutdown, especially after A/C unit used and in hotter weather. The engine is not overheating. I do not have a time delay (5-pin) relay, just a single-speed four-pin relay #85-22-310. Is this an electrical or thermal problem? I have read on this BB that it is possible for the fan thermoswitch on the radiator to get so "heat-soaked" from the nearby turbo that the fan can run for a very long time, even run the battery down if weak. There's supposed to be a heat-shield on the switch to help prevent this. Mine only has a little metal collar around it; I can't see that this would provide much shielding. I have also read that there is a circuit from the high-pressure side of the A/C system, so that the fan runs when the pressure is up, but I can't see this being the problem even if the system were over-filled (I had a recent conversion R-12 to R-134). Somebody else posted this problem (July 30th) but got no responses. Anybody?
My plan: replace the thermoswitch (original, 120,000 miles) and install an effective heatshield... If I use an 82 degree thermoswitch, will that be a problem compared to stock 87 degree thermoswitch?
Any input much appreciated.
