When you move the shifter lever inside the car, the motion is transferred to the transmission by a rod that moves in and out of the transmission itself. Pretty simple...

...the rod is "split up" into two peices... and they are connected by a rubber block, called the SHIFT COUPLER. Run a search on it for more info.

Basically, this coupler is DESIGNED to break in the event of an accident, so that the entire rod aseembly isnt turned into a flying spear of death for passengers in the car. (like my description? ;)

so anyways, it will eventually break down and cause abnormal transmission behacior, but this DOES NOT necesarily mean your tranny is broken, you just need to get a new coupler.

It IS possible to temporarily fix it, so that you can drive the car, and it's relatively easy.... but like i said the fix is TEMPORARY. At some point you will need to get it replaced, and it's a pretty straightforward simple job for a dealership or an indy mechanic, as long as they have the part on hand and they don't need to wait for it.

I did this job just the other day on my friends 1987 9000 turbo. He didn't have reverse or 5th gear... and it turned out to be the coupler.

I fixed it for him so he could go to work for the week, and schedual an appointment for his day off...

to you i would just suggest taking it to a shop when you get the chance. If you are truely interested in fixing it yourself... here's what you do:

1. Pop the hood of your car, and stand on the drivers side of the car. Look down with a flashlight directly underneath the intake manifold while someone else inside the car shifts the lever back and forth. You should be able to see the rod moving in and out, and you should also be able to see the coupler.

2. Carefully move wires out of the way, and you also might have to remove the rubber intake boot on the throttle body to reach your hand in towards the coupler.

3. when you can reach the coupler. place several "zip ties" around it in an X pattern, to hold it together. Have the person in the car test your job, by trying to shift into first and second.

This took me about 30 minutes, but i also knew what i was looking for, and had a second person to help, and also had all the zip ties i needed... and the "know-how" to take the intake boot off and such...

...if you don't feel comftorable doing any of this work... then just take it to a shop, you should have it back in a few days... good as new, for under $100... unless they find OTHER stuff wrong with your car, god forbid! ;
