If you check out http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/models/1990/pr9.html, you'll see that there is a difference in the intermediate drive between the Turbo and non turbo (S). According to the Parts Catalogue, there is a part number difference between the trannies.
At a minimum, if the car is a non-turbo, I'd make sure I get the right tranny. The N/A with autobox is pretty slow to begin with; messing with the ratio won't help any.
