My memory indicates that the 91-93 2.3 engines were more susceptible to timing chain breakage; presumably the 94+ engines should be fine under normal circumstances. The reason for failures in the earlier engines actually resides in the balance shaft drive mechanism. A sprocket in that affair was made of a softish metal that tended to wear down, allowing the balance shaft chain to fall off, tangle with the timing chain, and cause breakage. This sprocket was replaced with a better one starting in the second half of 93.

I've had mechanics tell me my timing chain is noisy, when in fact it's the serpentine belt tensioner pulley that's rattling. That misdiagnosis is frequent. An old tensioner pulley (or idler pulley) will rattle due to play in its bearings, and is about a $30 part. You might like to try that if you're concerned about noise.
