The only thing I can think of is that by lowering the car wile the strut is not technically attached to the strut mount, the spring would then fully extend, either popping out of its place sideways, yet still held in by the strut shaft, might cause bending. The other thing that sounds more likely to happen is that while fully extending itself, the spring would tear your rubber a-arm bushings apart by pushing down too hard while their locked in place. That would be bad.
Given there are a few dangers with spring compressors, they are known dangers. Those two thing i mentioned are only two off the top of my head, there might be more stuff wrong with doing that. Personally, I'm just going to stick with my compressors and be careful.
