have to hit AUTO first as you noticed. I believe this is normal.
When OFF, the AC compressor still runs, (at least in my car), so if you want the compressor not to run, you must choose ECON.
Heat works in either Auto or ECON as others noted.
If you're only getting heat when the ACC is set to HI, but not when set to 82 (and it's cool out) then you have a problem that I also have in my car. I've been told it's either the cabin temp sensor or the ACC itself. -AMG
