Re: harmonic balancer Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: harmonic balancer, Todd ![]() |
As I understand, the only difference is in the shutter wheels on the back of the balancer. That provides information on the crank position. With the wrong shutter wheel, the timing would be way, way off. I'd guess that the engine wouldn't even run with the wrong one.
Disconnecting the battery simply forces the control to adaptation. Disconnecting both battery leads is unnecessary - just remove one. I always remove the negative lead. Why? Because the chassis is grounded. If you use a wrench to loosen the nut on the clamp, and you do the positive lead first, if the wrench accidently hits the chassis, fireworks will shortly follow. However, if you remove the negative lead and you accidently hit the chassis, no big deal. Of course, you still have to watch out for the positive lead.
So just removing one lead will do the job.
So, ruling out the harmonic balancer itself, I'd assume that somebody hit something while doing the job. First off, how do you know you're running rich? Have you pulled the spark plugs and looked? They tell the story. If the plugs are old, just replace them. Make sure you replace them with the exact NGKs as specified in the manual. NO SUBSITUTIONS. The DI system is very sensitive to spark plug type.
If just one cylinder is running rich, then suspect a sticky fuel injector in that cylinder.
If you do estabilish that the car is truly running rich - black plugs, but not oil-fouled - check the Fuel Pressure Regulator. Make sure that the hose from the throttle body to the FPR is in good shape. Suck on the vacuum hose to the FPR - if you get fuel (yuuuk!) then the FPR diaphram is leaking, causing a rich mixture. You may need to have the fuel pressure checked.
Just because the Balancer was replaced at/near the same time you're running rich, don't assume the two MUST be linked. It could be a coincidence, or it might have been somebody hitting a hose while working on the car. Trying to force a connection may make you replace a lot of things unnecessarily.
Also -revisit why you think you have a problem - what are the symptoms you're seeing, and why do you think that due to a rich mixture?
