Since most of the posts in this BB are posted by people with Saab 9000 problems, I am posting a brief history of my '89 9000CD in terms of reliability. There are many out there that were/are very reliable.

Bought it with 97K miles, today I donated it to the NKF with 200K miles, 7 years later.

Never touched the 2.0 liter engine. It has been flawless, it even has the original water pump. Has never left me stranded, unlike my '94 Aero which had a DI failure while cruising in the highway recently.

In terms of the motor the only thing I did was changed the belts twice, the belt tensioner and idler pulleys once.

Changed oil every 3000 miles with fossil oil, burnt less than 1/2 a quart every 3k miles even near the end of its life. Why use synthetic?

Original Auto box, yes, they can last 200K miles if you don't abuse them and change the fluid at least once a year. Maybe I was just lucky?

Original shocks/struts and suspension, still handled well.

Since ownership here is a list of things that were fixed/replaced:
2 Sets of brake pads
1 set of disks
engine belt tensioner and belts
2.5 sets of tires
2 sets of mufflers(cat back)
1 down pipe
heater blower motor
Alternator
Set of brushes for the regulator
Some misc intermitten switches, like the power window switches.
1 window regulator
Lower engine mounts
Gas pumps
Battery

Not bad!

At 184K miles, my wife was sideswiped, damaging the two side doors and the pillar got pushed in.

The insurance totaled it and I drove it since (after some body work) to reach the 200K miles mark.

The body had no rust.

I just wish my '94 Aero and the 9-5 wagon is half as reliable as the CD was. Based on what I have seen so far it is unlikely.
