My '88 9000T came with an 80 amp. I blew a diode, so I decided to replace the whole thing. I think the price difference from Sobstory between the 80 amp and 115 amp was something like $20. So I bought the 115 amp. All I did was swap the pulley from the old alternator over to the new one.
I think the 80 amp alternator is marginal. I'm seeing much better system voltages with the 115 amp than the 80, even when it had a fresh voltage regulator. Voltage stays up much better under heavy load, like idling at a light (brake lights on) with rear defroster on and headlights on (typical winter mode.)
