I haven't heard that you can't go back to regular. As Dick iFC says, you may notice some issues, but those are due to the fact that regular oil does not hold viscosity at low temperatures as well, degrades faster, etc.
Some folks have reported problems going from regular to synthetic in older cars. I believe (but don't know for a fact) that it's due to the superior lubrication and detergent qualities of synthetic. Old cars build up crud at seals, and those crud blockages are dissolved by the detergents in the synthetic, causing leaks. Not on every car, just on some. And it's not that a good quality 'regular' oil doesn't have detergents - they do. But not so good regular oils have minimal detergent action. However, since synthetic is a premium product, most come chock-a-block full of the goodies.
In your case, I would stick with synthetic. It just plain works better.
