1998 9000CSE; 116K mi.
The AM/FM tuner in the stock Harmon Kardon radio/cassette began intermittently cutting out about 6 months ago. Now it is muted (no sound and no static) 100% of the time. The cassette and CD players work, speakers are fine, and tuner is getting power (station freqs, etc. visible on digital display).

Suspecting the antenna, I tried a suggestion from another posting in this space to bypass antenna (disconnect antenna and insert philips screwdriver instead -- in center of jack without touching surrounding shield). Still no sound or even static.

I then verified the electrical connectivity of the antenna cable (both signal and shield) from end to end (from the connectors at radio and at antenna). I also made sure that the signal and shield were not shorted. I then even verified that there was connectivity to the tip of the antenna itself with the cable plugged into the antenna unit. All was fine. Unless there is some cable/connector impedance mismatch issue? But, remember, there is NO SOUND AT ALL, NOT EVEN STATIC. Is there any way this could still be an antenna problem?

Convinced it must then be the radio, I bought an identical unit from a '98 9K CSE in a junkyard. Amazingly, the identical problem persists.

I have a hard time accepting that this is just an unlucky coincidence, i.e. TWO bad radios. A friend suggested that perhaps the radio has a feature that mutes the output when an accessory (say a cellphone) is in use or it detects a less than optimal antenna connection. I don't have any accessories connected, however.

The only other possible culprit I thought of was the amp. I believe my car has one under one of the seats. Is it possible that there are separate amps for the radio and CD player? (remember, the CD player works).

Does anybody have any ideas on what to try next? I'm stumped. Thanks...
