How can you give a College kid that advice? As a dealer in sub-$5k cars you have to be familiar with relative part costs, their availability amd more importantly the availability of mechanics familiar with the brand. We don't even know what part of the country this kid is from. You can't pre-suppose his wrenching ability or the availability of a good local indy.

Too many frustrated Saab owners have been seduced by the 'just fix this and drive trouble-free for 100,000 miles' routine. We all know better than that and I think you are doing this College Student a disservice. How could you suggest his problems will be gone by throwing another $2,000 into a car in which he's already spent $4,000. Isn't the vehicle history relevent?

Time to cut and run on this car, IMHO, and I don't even know its maintenance history:
CD - not attractive to collectors
Auto - not attractive to collectors
'92 - TCS: not attractive to collectors

If you buy a new tranny for this car, you will be its last owner. Of course you could give it to your younger brother because you would refuse to sell it at market value on principal. You could also keep it for yourself, follow this forum and watch every thread become a self-fulfilling prophecy of weekend wrenching.
