Use of Neutral in Auto Trans to save MPG - risks??

when i was younger and my 69 442 conv was my only car and much of my summer lawn mowing money went into gas, i frequently used neutral, and coasting, in order to get the gas mileage up over ten into the 12-13 range around town (balanced out all the stop light launches)
now, many years later, i'm just getting to know my 93 cse auto and the mpg is considerably less then the mpg in my standard 9000's for all the around town, stop light, stop sign driving.
in fact, it's also considerably less than my 88 325ic auto trans, that i used to have, and less than my subaru legacy wagon auto trans that i used to have
right now, i've been getting 13.4 for the last day since resetting it, with new plugs and what it think is a better DI.
it was 15.6 after getting off the beach into more normal around town driving (no stop light every block!), but even if i'm getting 16 average around town,
with this kind of mileage, i'm starting to feel like i may as well be driving around the 442
i notice, however, that i can get considerably better mpg if i just slip into neutral and coast since much of my time is spent driving up to stop lights.
are there any risks to the transmission to use neutral frequently??
accelerate, neutral, and then back in gear when it's time to move again??
thanks...
