You probably knocked the ALT bulb askew. The ALT bulb is part of the circuit that allows the alternator to start up. The path is battery-ignition switch - ALT bulb - thin green or yellow wire to back of alternator. Anything disturbs that path, and the alternator won't work.
I would go back in and make sure that the ALT bulb is properly seated. It may have burnt out - if a bulb is on its last legs, sometimes some physical shock will break the filament. If so, replace it ONLY with the exact same rating bulb- no substitutes! Make sure the socket the bulb goes into is OK, and that the connectors to the circuit board are seated properly. Check the operation of the ALT bulb (ignition to ON) before you put the dash top back on.
