Oil wars! Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Wed, 15 Sep 2004 07:51:14 In Reply to: Re: Oil, oil, oil, Paul Broeckx, Wed, 15 Sep 2004 06:29:25 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
This is a real holy war topic. I'll try to tread lightly.
I'm still stuck in the 3000 mile camp. Frankly, I think that really goes back to The Old Days (20 years +) when oil wasn't as good as it is today, and a lot more combustion products leaked into the oil, degrading it.
My take is every 3000 - 5000 (max) with good quality dino oil (and filter). If I were running synthetic, I'd still not go over 5000 miles. Yes, synthetic oil will last much longer than dino oil. However, Oil breakdown isn't usually the big issue. Combustion by-products produce acids, and those are neutralized by buffers in the oil. When those buffers are used up, the acid level increase. Also, there are particles floating in the oil. The filter catches most, but the really small stuff still circulates.
So I'm a big believer in replacing the oil 'frequently' (3-5K miles), primarily to flush out the gunk. This is especially true as engine mileage goes up.
There are many opinions on oils. The previous are mine, and others are welcome to add.
