If you look at the oil pump housing it is no natural stop for the seal until very far in.
Now look at the crank pulley and you see a tapered end of the pulley that works as a starter for the seal to slide up on.
If you push the seal all the way in to the stop, the lip on seal is barely going to ride on the tapered end of the crank pulley.
It was less of a problem with the very first generation white seals since they were almost twice the thickness of the new red (or even the 2 year only black) seals.
The lip on the white seal was also more in center of seal than on the red one.
