Hey I am new here but have been interested in SAAB's for a long time. My gf is looking to buy a used car, and I convinced her to get a 9000. Today we went out to check out a 1994 9000CS. It's owned by an old man since day one. The body looks good. The interior is not so good, with cigarett burns on drivers seat and small cut on passenger's seat. The mileage is 113K. He asked for $2500.00. We figured if we could get it to $2000 it'd be a good deal. BTW the car drives very good. The suspension felt solid.
Here are a couple questions I would like to get answers before actually making the decision:
1. I heard the early 2.3 16V engine had a premature timing chain fail problem. But starting from 1993 they improved the design. So on 1994 model (the 2.3L I4 non turbo) it's not a problem any longer. The owner said he got the oil changed every 3000 miles; if this is true the timing chain can go 200 or even 300K miles, right? If it requires replacement, is that a DIY? (I can replace timing belt on my 1990 Acura Legend which has a V6 engine. Is replacing a timing chain much harder?)
2. The SRS stayed on all the time. I searched the internet and found a safety recall regarding this. Since the car is 10 years old, will the dealer fix it for free?
3. There seemed to have some oil leak from top of then engine at the area where it meets the automatic transmission. Is that from valve cover?
The owner has also replaced the crank pulley, the belt tensioner which seem to have some faulty design. The who exhaust is changed. The tires are fairly new. The brake was firm and smooth. SO it could be a good deal. Since I am totally new to SAAB, any input is appreciated. TIA
