Two ways, a lot depends on luck and how limber and thin your arms are.
No matter what, always remove the ground wire from the battery first. Just make sure you've got the radio code.
The VR is mounted on the back of the alternator, held on with two screws. Usually, but not always, phillips head. If you can remove the screws, you can pop out the old VR and insert the new. It requires a lot of twisting with the alternator in the car; if the screws are really stuck, you can't always get the leverage. But it's worth a try.
If you jack up and support the RF, and remove the RF tire, you can usually reach through the hole in the fender inner-liner, and get behind the alternator. This is blind, but doable.
The other method which I've used is to come down from above. If you can get your arm between the firewall and intake manifold, you can get to the back of the alternator. My recommendation here is to get first put on a rubber glove - it can get dirty back there. Then cut a small hole in a plastic garbage bag and stick your arm through it. Tape at the wrist with duct tape.
Why the garbage bag? Two reasons. First, it can be dirty back there, and you're going to be reaching pretty far in. Dairy farmers are familiar with this. Don't ask. The other reason is that the plastic is slippery - it makes it easier to get your arm in and out, and to move it around.
In three times, I've been able to replace the VR from above. In the remaining case, the screws were so tight I had to remove the alternator and work them on the bench.
